About
Los Angeles Southwest College, located in Los Angeles, California, was founded in 1967 through the approval of the Los Angeles Board of Education. The school opened to an enrollment of 600 students, and since then has grown in size and scope, serving southern Los Angeles as a educational and cultural center, and serving over 6000 students annually. Los Angeles Southwest College is a two year public post-secondary institution that believes in providing students the best education possible, and takes pride in the fact that its students have a high graduation rate, becoming professionals in a variety of fields.


Academics
Southwest Los Angeles College offers a variety of programs that result in an associate degree or certificate. Students are able to choose a program of study that best suits their career or academic goals. Career and technical programs provide students with an education in one of many typically high demand fields, providing the training, skills, and knowledge necessary to operate as a professional in that field upon completion. Such programs typically take between one and two years to complete, resulting in an associate degree or certificate. Students enrolled in such a program will have a traditional classroom education combined with experience building practical courses. Graduates may seek employment immediately after graduation, though some fields may require certification or licensure.


Academic transfer programs are designed to facilitate the transfer to a four year institution after the completion of the freshman and sophomore years of a bachelors degree. Transfer to a public California college or university is made easier through agreements in place with schools throughout the state. Students wishing to transfer to a private or out of state school should meet with a counselor to outline a curriculum that best meets the requirements of the student's intended schools.

Admissions and Financial Aid
As an open enrollment institution, students interested in enrollment must will be admitted if they meet the minimum requirements for admission. Students should submit a completed application combined with transcripts and test scores, followed by placement testing to determine which general education courses they will have to take. Students are encouraged to participate in orientation and meet with a counselor to outline a curriculum and choose a programs of study.


Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the information from which will be used to determine financial need, aid program eligibility, and monetary awards. Financial aid must be reapplied for prior to the start of each academic year, and students may be asked to provide additional financial documentation to ensure the accuracy of the FAFSA prior to the disbursement of funds.
