About
The Wichita Area Technical College is now known as Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology or WSU Tech for short. WSU Tech is located in Wichita, Kansas. It began operation in 1965 as the Wichita Area Vocational-Technical School.
The school became a college in 1995 through a bill passed by the state senate allowing it to grant degrees. WSU Tech has since had its share of financial difficulty, particularly in 2004 when it lost 3.4 million dollars in funding.
Since that time the school has rebounded, being placed under new governing board and having recently built the new National Center for Aviation Training at Jabara Airport. The school offers over 70 programs through its three campuses located throughout the city.
Academics
Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology offers associate of applied science degrees, certificates, and diplomas to its student graduates based on their program of study.
Programs are divided into the fields of aviation, health care, manufacturing, design and general education. Degree programs are predominantly designed to prepare students for work in the field of their choosing immediately after graduation. Thus, students will possess the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as trade or service professionals.
Certificate and degree programs also utilize practical experience in their curriculum. This may offer students the opportunity to implement their knowledge prior to graduating to have a better understanding of their field. Technical and vocational programs are typically reflective of the community needs, offering workforce development to the service area.
Students may also pursue transfer through study in the general education program, completing requirements necessary for transfer to a four year institution to earn a bachelor's degree. Programs offered at WSU Tech include:
- Avionics Technology
- Dental Assistant
- Medical Assistant
- Automotive Service Technology
- Interior Design
WSU Tech also provides online learning opportunities for individuals in need of a flexible schedule. Online courses may be pursued in conjunction with campus based courses. Courses are web based, with notes, videos and lectures provided through the site.
Some courses may require on campus meetings with teachers which may be scheduled for. Final exams for some courses may also require proctoring, which may be set up through a third party if the students is not within the geographical area of the school.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Students who wish to enroll at WSU Tech may begin the process by applying online. Once the application is submitted the student will review payment options, attend orientation and register for courses. As an open enrollment institution, all applicants may be admitted if they meet the minimum requirements for admission. A meeting with an advisor is also recommended so that the student may explore options and plan for their academic and professional future.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the school's student data form, both of which may be completed online. Once submitted the school will review the student's information and make a determination of need, eligibility and award.
The school may request additional information from the student in order to check accuracy prior to disbursing funds. All financial aid information should be submitted in a timely manner or risk having payments delayed or refused.
