McDowell Technical Community College is located in Marion, North Carolina at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was established in 1964 as the Marion-McDowell Industrial Education Center. Eventually, it was called the McDowell Technical Institute and McDowell Technical College until it was named MTCC.
Despite the change of names, MTCC adhered to its mission to provide lifelong learning opportunities through accessible, high quality education and services which ultimately aims to improve the quality of life of individuals and attain community development.
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, MTCC offers Certificate, Diploma and Associate degree programs. Its Health Information Technology program is also certified by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
MTCC provides academic transfer, technical and vocational, basic skills and continuing education programs utilizing both traditional and non-traditional teaching methods. These programs are designed to prepare students for a professional career or higher education in any four-year institutions.
Continuing Education program caters to adults of diverse age and educational backgrounds. They are given the opportunity to acquire lifelong learning through this program. Moreover, distance learning is intended to provide flexibility and convenience for the students.
MTCC hosts several educational, cultural and community activities for the students to enrich their academic experience. Students can also be involved in organizations such as the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society-Beta Zeta Lambda Chapter and National Technical Honor Society.
