Towson University (TU) is a large, comprehensive public university near the Baltimore metro area in the suburban community of Towson, Maryland. TU is nationally recognized for many of its academic programs, including those in the arts and sciences, business, communications, education, health professions, and computer information systems, among others. TU is situated on a 328-acre campus that is attractively landscaped with woods and streams, and characterized by buildings of both traditional and modern architecture.

More than 60 undergraduate majors are available at Towson University, with 44 master's programs and four doctoral programs. The most popular undergraduate programs at TU are Business Administration, Mass Communications, Psychology, Nursing and Elementary Education. The most popular TU graduate programs are Human Resources Development, Teaching, Reading Education, Applied Information Technology and Instructional Technology. Towson University is the largest producer of teachers in Maryland.

Towson University has been listed as one of the top ten public master's degree institutions in North America by U.S. News & World Report.  Towson is considered one of 100 "Best College Buys" in America by Forbes magazine, and 100 "Best Values in Public Colleges" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.

History

Towson University was founded in 1866 as the State Normal School. It was founded in Baltimore, but moved its location to Towson in 1915. In 1935, the school changed its name to State Teachers College at Towson. In 1963, the name changed to Towson State College to reflect the development of a broader and more varied curriculum over the years. In 1976, the name was changed again to Towson State University to reflect its status in the University System of Maryland. In 1997, the name was updated to its current Towson University.

Academics

The academic calendar for Towson University follows a semester format, with fall, spring and summer semesters. There is a short "Mini-mester" in the month of January. The summer semester is actually a "Trimester" - a semester comprised of three shorter sessions.

Student Life

There are more than 200 student clubs and organizations available for involvement at Towson University, and more than 30 sororities and fraternities. Students can participate in anything from leadership activities with the Student Government Association, or journalism opportunities with the student newspaper, The Towerlight. There are a cappella singing groups or marching bands, a Frisbee club, and more.

Campus housing is available in a variety of options including residence halls and apartments. Students who prefer to live off campus will also find assistance in locating rooms or apartments to rent. There are 17 dining halls on the Towson campus, offering a full range of eating options.

Traditions

The traditional school colors for Towson University are gold, white and black. The school mascot is the tiger, and the athletic teams are nicknamed the Towson "Tigers."
