Arkansas State University - Newport, located in Newport, Arkansas, was founded in 1976 and was originally known as White River Vocation Technical School. In 1992 the school merged with Arkansas State University - Beebe, forming ASU Beebe/Newport, a merge that lasted until 2000, when the Newport Campus became a separate institution. Today the school operates three campuses located in Newport, Jonesboro and Marked Tree. The school is a public two year institution and part of the Arkansas State University System, allowing for ease of transfer to Arkansas State University four year institutions if so desired.

Academics
ASU Newport provides students a large number of programs that can result in a certificate or degree. These programs allow students to choose the technical or academic tract that best matches one's future plans and goals. Technical programs provide students training in the skills and abilities in a  given field of study necessary to enter the workforce as a professional. Programs take between one and two years to complete and prepare individuals for work at the entry level. Academic transfer programs facilitate transfer to a four year university by completing the first two years of a four year education. Once completed the student is free to apply to their desired school or schools, followed by the completion of the final two years of a bachelor's degree.

ASU Newport is an open enrollment institution, and as such any students that completes the application for admission and provides their transcripts and test scores will be admitted to the school. It is also recommended that students meet with a counselor to plan their curriculum and participate in orientation to introduce them to campus life prior to registration. Financial aid is available in the form of loans and grants. Students in need of assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which will be used to determine aid program eligibility and monetary awards.
