Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC)

Baton Rouge Community College, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, began operations in 1995 and opened its doors in 1998. The school formed as a result of the Justice Department's finding that racial segregation continued in Louisiana's post secondary education. A law suit followed resulting in two decades of legal battles. The settlement of the case called for the establishing of a community college which became BRCC. Since its establishment the school has grown, offering state of the art services and facilities for its students and expanding its educational offerings to meet the needs of the community. The college enrolls nearly 8000 students per year, with enrollment expected to increase in the future.

Academics

Baton Rouge Community College offers associate degrees and certificate programs for career and academic advancement. Academic programs fulfill the first two years of a four year education and allow for transfer to a four year university to pursue a bachelor's degree. Career and technical programs provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform successfully in a job based on their field of study. Graduates of such programs will be able to enter the workforce immediately. Certificate programs are generally shorter than associate degree programs, providing technical or career training minus the general education courses found in a degree curriculum.

Baton Rouge Community College is an open enrollment college, allowing anyone 18 years or older with proof of a high school diploma or GED the opportunity to pursue an education on the campus. Interested students must complete the application and submit all pertinent documents and transcripts to the school, after which a registration date will be given prior to the start of classes. Financial aid is available in the form of loans and grants. Students in need of financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine eligibility and awards. Some students may require to submit verification information as a result of new policies regarding financial aid.
