About
Harry S. Truman College, located in Chicago, Illinois, is a public two year community college founded in 1956 and is one of the seven colleges that comprise the City Colleges of Chicago. Originally established as a nameless night school, by 1961 the school had outgrown its facilities at Amundsen High School, moving to a new location once occupied by an elementary school and being given the name Mayfair College. By 1976 the school had once again outgrown its facilities, moving to a new uptown location and being renamed Northeast Community College. At the suggestion of Mayor John Daly's assistant, Frank Sullivan, the school was instead named after Harry S. Truman who had been a lifelong proponent of education. The school currently serves nearly 23,000 students a year, both internationally and locally, and is dedicated to providing all students an equal education.

Academics
Harry S. Truman College offers a large number of programs, allowing students to choose the one that best suits their academic or professional goals. Academic transfer allows students to complete the first two years of a four year education at low monetary cost, followed by transfer to a four year college or university to complete one bachelor's degree. The school has transfer agreements in place with several public illinois institutions, allowing for ease of transfer if the agreed upon requirements are met. School lacking an agreement with Harry S. Truman College may have different criterion for admission and it is advised students meet with a counselor to develop a curriculum best suited for the student's desired school or schools.

Career programs take between one and two years to complete, and result in a certificate or associate degree that demonstrates competency in one's area of study. Through such a program students will learn the skills and abilities necessary to enter the workforce as professionals. Courses will provide classroom and practical education, emulating real world scenarios and providing valuable experience. Graduates are qualified for entry level positions immediately after graduation.

Admissions and Financial Aid
As an open enrollment institution, any students who meet the minimum requirements for admission will be admitted upon submission of the application for admission. Students should provide transcripts and standardized test scores and may be required to take a placement exam prior to enrollment. Students are also encouraged to participate in orientation and meet with a counselor to determine program enrollment. Registration for classes takes place shortly before the start of each semester.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will be used to determine financial need, program eligibility, and monetary awards. Students may be required to provide additional financial documentation prior to the disbursement of funds to ensure the accuracy of the FAFSA. Financial aid should be applied for prior to posted deadlines, and must be reapplied for every academic year.

Athletics
Harry S. Truman college offers a small number of intercollegiate athletic programs through the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Intercollegiate athletics are part of the collegiate experience, offering a forum for healthy competition allowing students to experience camaraderie through the successes and failures that come with pursuing a unified goal. Such programs provide growth academically, personally, athletically and socially, as well as enhance the college experience for the student body and community.
