College of the Mainland (COM)

College of the Mainland, located in Texas City, Texas, is a public two year institution founded in 1966. The school's formation had been planned since 1935, and was finally realized when the cities in its service area of northern Galveston County approved the building bond necessary to establish the school. Since then the school has expanded, with additional facilities having been constructed to add additional room for newer programs and student services. In 2004 the school became one of three in Texas to allow high school students to complete the last two years of their high school education while earning an associate degree.

Academics

College of the Mainland offers nearly 70 programs of study that result in either an associate degree or certificate. These programs provide students with either the first two years of a four year education and allow for transfer to a four year school upon graduation, or prepare students for entry into the workforce through the development of skills and the imparting of knowledge necessary in a given field. Certificate programs generally take less time than degree programs, usually offering career educations as well, and lacking the general education courses that fill out an associate degree curriculum.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Students interested in enrollment at College of the Mainland must demonstrate proof of at least 1 year residency in the state of Texas prior to enrollment. Students must complete and submit the application, providing all necessary transcripts and taking placement tests as required by the school. Students should also meet with an academic advisor in order to determine which program of study they wish to pursue and which courses they should take.

Students in need of financial aid should apply for a federal PIN number and complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students should also complete and submit the COM financial aid application. All applications should be submitted prior to the set deadlines of the school. Financial aid is available in the form of grants loans and scholarships. Scholarships may require separate applications to be submitted to the scholarship's overseeing body and may be awarded for reasons other than need.

Instruct preschool-aged children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for primary school in preschool, day care center, or other child development facility. May be required to hold State certification.
