If you're looking to get your feet wet at a community college without diving in to a big university, check out College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California. There are nearly 8,500 students including 160 that reside in student housing. CR has 4 campuses with a combined enrollment of about 50,000.

The school boasts 1,000 different classes and countless majors including the Associate in Arts which is mainly a general education degree obtained to ease transfer into a four-year school.

Although many students probably attend CR with the intentions of transferring to a four-year school, this school does not root its identity in being a stepping stone.  With its student health center, gym, and housing facilities; CR gives the university experience without the price. At around $50 per credit hour for California residents and $270 for non-residents, CR can prepare students to move on to a university or start their career without a mountain of debt.

College of the Redwoods is located on the Northern coast of California; it is about 260 miles north of San Francisco and 400 miles south of Portland, Oregon. The school is molded into the landscape amid giant trees and mountains so it appears to blend into the landscape. The campus is beautiful which makes taking a tour all that more important for interested students.
