College of the Siskiyous

2211 College View Drive, Redding, CA

The College of the Siskiyous, located in Weed, California, was founded in 1957 and began operations in 1959. The school is the northern most college in California, situated at the base of Moutn Shasta, and the only college in the Siskiyous County. The college's name comes from the Siskiyous mountain range that divides California and Oregon. COS is a two year institution funded and operated by the state of California. A second campus is located in Yreka, also located in the Siskiyous County. The school serves approximately 3000 students per year.

Academics

The College of the Siskiyous offers programs in a variety of subjects. Technical and career training, liberal arts and sciences, and health, recreation and physical education are the three primary fields of focus for the school. Within the framework of those fields programs are developed, offering degrees and/or certificates to graduates. Transfer to four year institutions is possible through agreements and regional accreditation which allows for the completion of the freshman and sophomore years of college at Siskiyous. Individuals pursuing career training or allied health training will be qualified to work in their field of study upon program completion, entering the work force at the entry level.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Students interested in enrolling at The College of the Siskiyous must meet one of the following criteria: Be at least 18 years old, a high school graduate, recipient of California High School proficiency or GED, a high school student with permission from the school board, or is an international student and has followed procedures for international students. In addition, some students may be interested in applying for on campus housing, as COS is one of 10 community colleges in California to offer such housing. Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants, scholarships and work study programs. Students in need of aid must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), after which eligibility and awards will be determined. The financial aid and admissions office have merged; as such students in need of assistance may look to the admissions office for help.

Athletics

The College of the Siskiyous Eagles participate in a number of team sports and the intercollegiate level. In particular the men's basketball team has entered the California Final Four a number of times. The school promotes athletic programs as an additional form of education, providing students with skills in teamwork and socializing, as well as developing the discipline necessary to achieve one's goals.
