Nursing Program

The nursing program at Collin College prepares students for careers in hospitals, convalescent centers, clinics, home care, and physician's offices. The program focuses on knowledge, techniques and procedures for promoting health, providing care for the sick, disabled, infirmed, or other individuals or groups. Collin County Community College District, now referred to as "Collin College" or "Collin," is a public community college that includes three primary campuses, and four education centers in the Collin County of Texas: Central Park Campus (McKinney, Texas), Preston Ridge Campus (Frisco, Texas), Spring Creek Campus (Plano, Texas), Courtyard Center (Plano, Texas), Collin Higher Education Center (McKinney, Texas), Allen Center (Allen, Texas), and Rockwall Center (Rockwall, Texas).

Collin College offers credit and continuing education courses on its campuses, as well as electives and specialty courses online and at each of its centers. It offers more than 100 associate's degrees and professional certificates in a wide range of academic disciplines. Its mission is to provide a community-centered institution that is committed to developing the skills, character and intellect of its students.

The faculty at Collin College is highly acclaimed, boasting three Collin College professors that have been named the national U.S. Professor of the Year - a coveted title in collegiate teaching. Many other awards have been conferred on the Collin College faculty, which also includes patent holders, authors and noted scholars in their fields of expertise.

Collin College has been "first" to offer several innovative programs, including its Alternative Teacher Certification Program, which was established in response to a critical need for classroom teachers. Collin later launched its associate's degree in teaching to train qualified teachers to help combat the shortage.

Collin is one of only six colleges in the U.S. designated to provide networking technology training as a Cisco Certified Training Center. Other special programs at Collins College include the Center for Advanced Study in Math and Natural Science, the Center for Scholarly Civic Engagement, Distance Learning, Learning Communities, Service Learning, Weekend College, and more.

History

Collin College began offering post-secondary education courses at local high schools in 1985.

Academics

The academic calendar for Collin College follows the semester format, with fall and spring semesters, and three short summer sessions. Additionally, there is a shorter "Wintermester" that runs from mid-December through the first week of January with a short break for the holidays. There is also a "Maymester," which offers classes that run form mid- to late May.

Colleges and Schools

Collin College divides it academic units into departments and centers, rather than into colleges and schools. It offers four types of associate-level degrees, academic transfer degrees and certificates, as well as technical workforce degrees and awards.

Collin College also awards select post-associate degree certificates.

Student Life

The Office of Student Life at Collin College offers students opportunities to get involved in civic, educational, leadership and social programs. There are at least seven recognized honor societies available at Collin, and more than 50 student organizations and clubs. Students can also work on special projects or join in social activities that are organized by the Office of Student Life. These activities include field trips, guest speakers, educational conferences, athletics and entertainment.

The school colors for Collin College are blue and white, and the school mascot is a cougar.

Collin College offers men's and women's basketball and tennis. The Cougars and "Lady Cougars" compete in intercollegiate sports at the local, regional and national levels.
