Grossmont College

Grossmont College is a two-year community college located in El Cajon, California in the region near San Diego. Grossmont College offers more than 150 academic programs that lead to associate degrees, professional certificates and successful transfer to four-year universities for completion of a bachelor's degree.  Grossmont College is one of two community colleges in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District that is part of the California public college system.

In addition to offering a range of degree and certificate programs, Grossmont also offers the Grossmont Middle College High School program. This program is designed for 11th and 12th grade students in the Grossmont Union High School District, who wish to complete their high school requirements and start earning college credits at Grossmont College.

Grossmont offers online learning for many of its courses and programs. Online students use the Blackboard platform for online learning, and have access to a host of online student services.

In 2012, Grossmont College is celebrating its 50-year anniversary, and the completion of several new buildings on its 135-acre campus. The new Administrative Services building and Griffin Center will enhance the educational experience for new and continuing students.

History

In 1960, voters established the Grossmont Junior College District. In 1961, Grossmont College opened its doors for initial classes at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley with more than 1,500 enrolled students. In 1962, a bond was approved to fund a college campus in the Fletcher Hills area near the cities of La Mesa and El Cajon. Classes opened at the new campus in 1964. The facilities on the new campus were completed in 1967.

In 1978, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District opened a second community college called "Cuyamaca College." This college is located on a 165-acre campus south of El Cajon.

Traditions

The traditional school colors for Grossmont College are green and yellow, with white as an accent color. The school mascot is the griffin, a mythological creature that is part eagle, part lion. The athletic teams are nicknamed the Grossmont "Griffins."

Athletics

The Grossmont "Griffins" athletic teams include men and women's basketball. They compete in the Pacific Coast Conference and have scored several championships.

Satellite Campuses

Grossmont College has one campus, but also offers online learning. Its sister college in the district, Cuyamaca College, is also a two-year community college located in the El Cajon area.

Community Life

The city of El Cajon is located in east San Diego County. Formerly the agrarian center of San Diego County, El Cajon is a scenic region of mesas and farmlands that has now developed into a vibrant metro area. The area offers many community events and beautiful parks, as well as easy access to the entertainment and recreation venues of San Diego.
