Guilford Technical Community College

Guilford Technical Community College, located in Jamestown, North Carolina, founded in 1958 when it was known as Guilford Industrial Education Center, an institution designed to prepare individuals for careers in manufacturing. By 1965 the school was renamed Guilford Technical Institute as a result of being able to grant associate degrees. By 1983 the school was granted approval to add a college transfer program, becoming Guilford Technical Community College. The school originally opened its doors to an enrollment of 50 but has grown over the years to nearly 15,000 students a year. As a result, the school operates several campuses and is dedicated to providing quality services and education to its service area through program development and updated and new facilities perfect for the modern students.

Academics

Guilford Technical Community College offers nearly 100 programs of study that provideĀ  academic transfer or career training opportunities, with most programs take between one and two years to complete, resulting in an associate degree or career training certificate. Academic transfer programs fulfill the first two years of a four year education, allowing the student to apply for transfer to a four year institution to pursue the completion of a bachelor's degree by submitting applications to his or her school of choice. Transfer opportunities to public North Carolina institutions are eased through agreements in place with the school facilitating transfer if certain academic requirements are met.

Career training programs provide education and training for a particular field, providing the skills and abilities necessary to perform as a professional in the workplace within that field. Students will participate in practical courses as well as more traditional classroom educations, the mixture of which is dependent upon the student's chosen field, and providing practical experience that is beneficial in the workplace. Upon completion the student's degree or certificate will demonstrate occupational competence and allow for the immediate pursuit of employment. Most programs offered reflect community needs, resulting in more job availability.

Admissions

Guilford Technical Community College is an open enrollment institution allowing any student who meets the minimum standards for admission to enroll at after submitting a completed application for admission. Students will be asked to provide transcripts from previous schools and standardized test scores. Students may be required to take a placement exam and are encouraged to participate in orientation as well as meet with a counselor prior to registration. Course registration takes place before the start of each semester with tuition due shortly thereafter.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans and grants. Students in need of financial assistance must submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the resulting information from which will be used to determine the student's financial needs, aid program eligibility and monetary awards. Students must reapply for financial aid prior to the start of each academic year. Additionally, students may be asked to provide additional financial documentation to ensure the accuracy of the FAFSA prior to the disbursement of funds as per new federal aid regulations.

Clubs and Organizations

Guilford Technical Community College is home to a number of clubs and organizations, and as such encourages the participation of student in such clubs as well as the founding of new clubs if the current club listings do not meet specified goals or interests. Clubs may focus on education, social and cultural issues, extracurricular interests and activities as well as other interests. Students may participate in one or more clubs, allowing for the intermingling of interests and the development of social bonds outside of a classroom atmosphere. A club fair is held annually to promote clubs and encourage new membership.
