Massasoit Community College

58 Ross Way, Quincy, MA

Massasoit Community College, located in Brockton, Massachusetts, was founded in 1966, but can trace its origins to 1947 to a State Board of Education sponsored study to determine the feasibility of a low cost post secondary institution that was state sponsored. The study proposed the establishment of twelve community colleges, of which one would serve the Brockton and South Shore areas, this being MCC. Initial enrollment in the school was 358, which today has swelled to nearly 8000. The school has increased not only in enrollment, but in size, having grown from its initial five buildings to meet the demands and keep pace with the size and needs of the student body. As part of its commitment to higher education, the school continues to review and evaluate programs, facilities and services, adding and updating new ones as need be in order to keep pace with the modern student.

Academics

Massasoit Community College offers a variety of educational options for students to choose from. Students may pursue career training or transfer options, and will be assisted in their goals by a qualified faculty aimed at achieving one's goals. Career training programs provide students with skill development and education in a given field, allowing the individual to enter the workforce after completion as a qualified professional. Education is provided through traditional classroom education, and if necessary, through practical courses that provide controlled settings in order to practice and develop methods and techniques used commonly in the workplace. Programs take between one and two years to complete and resulted in a certificate or associate degree.

Academic transfer programs allow students to complete the first two years of a four year education at the low cost provided by MCC. Once completed, students will apply for transfer to a four year institution to complete their final two years and earn a bachelor's degree. Transfer to public Massachusetts schools is facilitated through agreements, though students may opt to apply to private or out of state schools which have different transfer requirements that must be fulfilled in order to be considered. Students should speak with a counselor in order to develop a curriculum that best meets the standards of the desired school or schools.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Massasoit Community College is a public, two year, open enrollment institution that allows any individual that meets the minimum requirements for admission to enroll once they have submitted an application and paid all associated fees. Students should provide transcripts of previous education and standardized test scores which may be used in lieu of a placement exam when considering the level of general education courses. Students should also participate in new student orientation and meet with a counselor to discuss goals, program enrollment and curriculum prior to registration.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will be used by the school to determine need and aid program eligibility when constructing the students financial aid package. All aid must be reapplied for each academic year. Students may be chosen at random by the school and asked to provide additional tax and financial information which will be compared to the submitted FAFSA to verify its accuracy.
