Oakland Community College (OCC), located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is the largest community college in the state.  OCC offers more than 100 two-year associate's degrees, and 45 one-year certificates, and has one of the highest transfer rates among all of the 28 community colleges in Michigan.

OCC has excellent programs in English as a Second Language, Workforce Development, and Nursing. A full 100% of OCC's nursing graduates pass the states licensing exam.  The Workforce Development programs at OCC include degree and certificate programs that are designed to prepare students for immediate employment upon graduation. While many careers require a higher-level education, not all careers require a bachelor's degree.  OCC's programs are career-focused so that students who earn an associate's degree or professional certificate are prepared for their chosen career.

History

In 1964,the Oakland Community College District was established in Oakland County, Michigan. The first community college in the district opened in 1965 with an enrollment of more than 3, 000 students on two campuses: Highland Lakes and Auburn Hills.

In 1967, a third OCC campus was established at Oak Park, which in 1980 replaced by a new campus in Southfield.  A new Royal Oak campus opened in 1982.

Academics

The academic calendar of Oakland Community College follows the semester format, with four short "semesters" in the academic year.

Colleges and Schools

Because it is a two-year community college, OCC is not divided into colleges and schools, but rather into programs.  OCC offers programs leading to five degrees:

  • Associate in Science

Student Life

OCC students who study at the Orchard Ridge Campus will enjoy its three restaurants, two of which are student teach labs for the acclaimed Culinary Studies Institute.

OCC students also will enjoy the athletics facilities at each campus, which are open to all enrolled students for fitness and recreation.

One of the services provided to OCC students are the childcare facilities at each campus. These centers are run by trained caregivers and provide interactive care for small children while their parents are attending classes. Fees and schedules for childcare vary slightly at each campus; so interested students should contact the campus of their choice for details.

The Womencenter is a college program that provides resources for female students of OCC and women in the community.  The goal of the center is to help women identify and achieve their personal, social and professional needs through education. The center offers workshops, seminars, support groups, peer counseling and more.

The OCC "Raiders" athletics teams participate in nine intercollegiate sports, with past championships for the men's basketball team and the women's softball team.
