Salt Lake Community College (UVU)

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is a public community college located in Salt Lake City, Utah, providing higher education and lifelong learning.  SLCC is the largest higher education institution in Utah, and offers associate's degrees, certificate programs, occupational career and technical education, workforce training, as well as developmental education, and transfer programs for students going on to four-year universities.

SLCC also offers some degree programs online.  The associate's degree programs available completely online are Business, Criminal Justice, General Studies and Sociology.

SLCC is a full-access institution that does not turn down any student applicants.  It has very low tuition costs and offers a wide range of study programs and small classes with a student to faculty ratio of 20 to 1.  It also offers flexible scheduling and 13 class locations (including its online programs).

History

Salt Lake Community College was established in 1948.

The college's Grand Theatre, which mounts several productions each year that are open to students and the public, is part of the SLCC's South City Campus.  It began as part of South High School in Salt Lake City in 1931 until the school closed in 1988.  That same year, SLCC bought the property to use as its city campus, but decided to retain the auditorium as the college's new theatre instead of developing it into classrooms.

Student Life

There are many activities to keep students busy at SLCC, including extramural athletics, involvement with the Globe Newspaper or Globe Radio, the LeaderShape program, numerous student activities and clubs, student government, and the student life and leadership program.  The Thayne Center for Service & Learning offers volunteer opportunities with nonprofit community organizations.

To help students select the area of study that is right for them, SLCC offers several workshops and resources.  Students may take the free "Career Clues Workshop" or "CHOICES," a free skills and interest assessment available via computers on campus.

The Career Library in the Student Center Building at the main Taylorsville Redwood Campus offers more resources to help students choose the right academic major and career. There are also academic and career advisors available to help guide students on the path that is right for them.

 Athletics

Salt Lake Community College has several Bruin teams that compete in intercollegiate athletics.  The Bruin sports teams include men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer.  The Bruin Cheer club is also very active.
