San Antonio College (SAC) is a two-year community college offering programs for associate's degrees, certificates for vocational or career training, continuing education, as well as college transfer study programs. SAC offers an excellent faculty and flexible scheduling to help a variety of students meet their educational needs. Flexible scheduling is available through day and evening classes, weekend classes, Internet courses, tele-courses, and off-campus classes.

San Antonio College is one of five Alamo Colleges serving Bexar County and the surrounding area. The Alamo Colleges are Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip's College and Northeast Lakeview College.

History

San Antonio College was founded in 1925 as the "University Junior College" as part of the University of Texas. Control of the college was later transferred to the San Antonio Independent School District. At that point its name was changed to "San Antonio Junior College."

In 1945, a newly formed San Antonio Junior College District assumed control of San Antonio Junior College and St. Philip's Junior College. In 1951, a renamed "San Antonio College" moved to its present site at San Pedro Avenue in San Antonio. The college gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1955. In the 1960s, the college developed into a comprehensive community college, adding occupational, technical and continuing education courses to its curriculum.

The San Antonio Junior College District became the Alamo Community College District in 1982, and was later referred to as "Alamo Colleges."

Student Life

There are many student clubs and organizations available for involvement at San Antonio College, and the Office of Student Life (OSL) also organizes many events and activities for students hoping to connect with others. Some of the many student organizations on campus include the Astronomy Club, Black Student Alliance, Catholic Student Association, Gay and Lesbian Association (GALA), the Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES), and many recreational sports teams, among others.

The Loftin Student Center houses the school cafeteria, many vendor outlets, and rooms that are available to rent for an event or activity.

The SAC school colors are red and white, and the school mascot is the ranger.

Athletics

The SAC sports program provides all student-athletes with an opportunity for sports competition. All student-athletes who wish to try out for a team must be enrolled at SAC in 9 credit hours, must be in good standing, and carry a 2.0 GPA.  San Antonio College is part of the South Texas Club Sports League (STCSL). Community Life

The SAC Office of Student Engagement provides many opportunities for students to assist the community through service learning initiatives. San Antonio College strives to instill civic responsibility in its students, faculty and staff, while also helping the surrounding communities. The service areas of San Antonio College include Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr and Wilson counties.

The SAC offers community access to its Koehler Cultural Center, Scobee Planetarium, theatre events, music events and visual arts gallery.  SAC's home, San Antonio, is a good area for exploring history and art, with lots of restaurants, recreation and entertainment. The San Antonio River Walk offers access to good restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues. There are three fall music festivals in the area, many theme and water parks, the San Antonio Zoo, King William Historic District, and more.
