History

San Antonio College was founded in 1925 as the "University Junior College" as part of the University of Texas. Control of the college was later transferred to the San Antonio Independent School District. At that point its name was changed to "San Antonio Junior College."

In 1951, a renamed "San Antonio College" moved to its present site at San Pedro Avenue in San Antonio. The college gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1955. In the 1960s, the college developed into a comprehensive community college, adding occupational, technical and continuing education courses to its curriculum.

The San Antonio Junior College District became the Alamo Community College District in 1982, and was later referred to as "Alamo Colleges."
