About
Shelton State Community College, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was founded in 1950, opening its doors in 1952 and originally known as Tuscaloosa Trade School. The school was renamed in 1954 to honor J.P. Shelton, a state legislator who had lobbied for the school. IN 1976 the school was renamed again, the time to Shelton State Technical College. In 1975 Brewer State Junior College opened a branch campus in Tuscaloosa, and Shelton State Community College was formed in 1979 through the merger of Shelton State and the branch campus of Brewer College. A third school, C. A. Fredd State Technical College was combined with Shelton State Community College in 1994, and a new campus was built three years later to house the addition. In 1997 the school was named the Alabama Community College of the Fine Arts reflecting its role in the arts and reaffirming its artistic mission alongside its other academic and career offerings.
Academics
Shelton State Community College offers a variety of programs that result in a certificate or degree, typically taking one to two years to complete, and allowing the student to choose the program that best reflects the students needs and goals. Academic transfer programs allow students to complete the first two years of a four year education, followed by the submission of an application to a four year college or university to complete one's bachelor's degree through additional study and the transfer of credits. Students should meet with a counselor to discuss a curriculum that best reflect the requirements necessary for the student's desired school or schools of transfer.
Technical and career programs provide specialized training and education in a specific field, allowing for the development of skills and abilities necessary for entry into the workforce as a qualified professional. Programs will have a mixture of classroom and practical courses, allowing for the application and strengthening of skills and techniques learned through theory in a simulated work environment. Shelton State Community College is a public, two year, open enrollment institution, that allows any individual interested in enrollment to do so through the completion and submission of the application for admission and payment of tuition. Students should also supply previous transcripts and test scores, which may be used to lieu of a placement exam. Students should also participate in student orientation in order to familiarize themselves with campus life as well as meet with the counselor to discuss program enrollment and curriculum development.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of aid must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the information from which will be used to determine a student's financial needs and aid program eligibility. Aid must be reapplied for prior to the start of each academic year and students may be chosen at random by the school to supply additional information to verify the accuracy of the FAFSA.
