Academics

Tyler Junior College is one of the largest colleges in the state of Texas, and as a result offer a large number of programs that provide career and transfer opportunities for its students. Career training programs provide a comprehensive education in a given field, allowing that individual to enter the workforce as a qualified professional upon completion. Students will have a mixture of classroom and practical courses, the former providing theoretical ideas, methods, and techniques which will be applied in simulated, controlled settings in the latter. Programs take between one and two years to complete, resulting in a certificate or degree which demonstrates competency and is useful in the pursuit of employment after graduation.

Academic transfer to a four year institution is accomplished by completing the first two years of such an education followed by applying to one's desired school or schools to transfer their credits and continue their pursuit of higher education. Upon transfer the student will complete the final two years, earning his or her bachelor's degree. Students transferring to a public Texas institution  will find transfer made easier through agreements in place that guarantee admission if certain requirements are met. Transfer to private or out of state schools will have varying requirements that should be researched well in advance if desired.

Such courses are also required by the state for the renewal of certain licenses or certifications. Adult education courses are for individuals who had not completed high school. Such courses provide the equivalent of a high school education and prepare individuals for the GED exam which provides a diploma equivalent to those offered by a high school.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Tyler Junior College is an open enrollment institution that allows any individuals that wishes to pursue higher education to do so by meeting the minimum requirements for enrollment, providing a completed application, and paying all accrued fees by the start of each semester. Students should also supply transcripts and test scores, which may be used in lieu of a placement exam. Students are also encouraged to meet with a counselor to discuss goals, program enrollment and curriculum, and it is recommended they participate in new student orientation to familiarize themselves with the campus.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships. Students in need of aid will provide their financial information through the completion and submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the resulting student aid report (SAR) from which will be used by the school to determine the need, program eligibility and awards for the student.
