University of California San Francisco, located in San Francisco, California, was founded in 1873 through the merger of the Toland Medical School with Cooper Medical College. The school became part of the University of California System of Schools through a transfer of control by the trustees. The school is one of ten that comprise the UC system, and it is the only school in that system dedicated specifically to graduate education. In addition to medical education, the school also functions as a medical center and hospital.
