Neuroscience Program
The neuroscience degree program at Weill Cornell Medical College prepares students seeking a future in neurological fields, such as neurologists, neuroscientists, psychophysicist, and more. The Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences was founded in 1952 on the concept that the convergence of two premier institutions-Sloan-Kettering Institute and Weill Cornell Medical College-could offer an extraordinary research and training ground for future generations of biomedical researchers.
The center's institutions are committed to research training and patient care, and include the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the Hospital for Special Surgery and The Rockefeller University.
Awarded Student Degrees and Programs
The Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences offers PhD degrees in seven programs of study:
Biochemistry and Structural Biology - This program offers opportunities for advanced training in the application of biochemical, structural, biophysical, and imaging methods to addressing questions relating to biological processes and mechanisms. Program members pursue vigorous research programs in the areas of membrane-protein structure and function, membrane trafficking and synaptic transmission, protein folding, intracellular and cell-surface signaling pathways, protein modification, membrane biochemistry and biophysics, DNA replication and repair, and RNA silencing and processing.
Cell and Developmental Biology - The Cell and Developmental Biology program offers opportunities to develop research training in cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, and molecular biology.
Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis - The Immunology & Microbial Pathogenesis program draws together a diverse faculty who seek to understand how the immune system works both as a unique entity as well as an integral part of higher organisms. Faculty members are as much at home in cell biology, biochemistry, development, genetics, structural biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology as they are in their own chosen specialties in immunology or microbial pathogenesis.
Molecular Biology- This program offers opportunities to develop research training in the molecular pathways involved in control of cell growth. The programs' internationally recognized faculty is comprised of nearly 40 members, whose diverse research interests can be grouped under three broad topics: (1) mechanisms of differentiation, growth control, and development; (2) mechanisms of DNA replication, DNA repair and chromosome maintenance; and (3) transcriptional control of gene expression and mRNA biosynthesis.
Neuroscience - Development and function of the nervous system is a unifying theme of the Neuroscience program. Focus areas in the program include: neural disease, synaptic transmission, developmental neurobiology and regeneration, vision, computational and systems neuroscience, and neuropharmacology.
Pharmacology - The Pharmacology program is unique in that it trains students in the scientific foundations that underlie modern pharmacology including chemistry and chemical biology, molecular biology, receptor biology, neurosciences, and cell and organ physiology.
Physiology, Biophysics and Systems Biology - The Physiology, Biophysics & Systems Biology program is designed to engage students in education through research in current and innovative aspects of three synergistic components of modern biomedicine: physiology-the functions of cells, tissues, and organs; biophysics-the application of principles of physics to biological processes; and systems-the complex interactions between components of a biological system.
Also offered are three Master of Science programs for qualified health care professionals:
Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research - The program is designed for those who wish to plan, implement and analyze quantitative and qualitative research studies using appropriate research designs. Students entering the program must have an MD degree, RN certificate, or a graduate degree in a clinical health related field, with three years of work experience; typically, physicians will have completed residency programs and nurses will have had several years of work experience prior to enrollment.
Clinical Investigation - This multidisciplinary training program is primarily for practicing health care professionals who hold medical degrees or are in professions or training programs focused on clinical research. The program provides fundamental clinical research skills to those pursuing long-term clinical investigative careers.
Health Sciences for Physician Assistants - This ARC-PA accredited program trains health care professionals to practice medicine with physician supervision in diverse clinical and academic settings. The 26-month curriculum provides students with fundamental principles of generalist clinical practice, along with training in general surgery and the surgical subspecialties.
Admission
Students are admitted for each academic year, defined by the start of courses in September. Applications must be submitted electronically using the Apply Yourself process available on the Graduate School web site and received by December 1.
Applications are then reviewed with the strongest candidates invited to attend Recruitment Days in February. The final date for acceptance is April 15.
Financial Aid/Tuition and Fees
PhD Programs:
All students accepted to PhD degree granting programs are awarded a full tuition scholarship, which includes all tuition and health insurance costs.
In addition, a generous annual stipend is awarded to each full-time student.
Although the Graduate School provides PhD students full funding, students are encouraged to apply for individual fellowships, which makes students more competitive for career opportunities following graduation.
Master's Degree Programs:
Tuition for a full-time student matriculated in the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research master's degree program is $21,000 for the entire program. However, students may matriculate and pay tuition on a per-credit-hour basis, currently $700 a credit hour. Tuition includes fees for matriculation and graduation, as well as miscellaneous thesis expenses.
Faculty
Nearly 250 faculty members with common interests in graduate education and basic biological and biomedical scientific research are appointed to the Graduate School faculty in particular programs of study.
