Medicine Degree

The medicine degree program at Albany Medical College prepares students for the independent professional practice of medicine. Albany Medical College is affiliated to Albany Medical Center, one of the largest employers in the Capital Region and the only academic health sciences center in northeastern New York. The mission of the college is to educate health care professionals from diverse backgrounds in preparation to handle the primary and specialty health care needs of the region and the country.

Albany Medical College was founded in 1839, and merged with Albany Hospital (founded in 1849) in 1982. Despite being separate organizations for over 150 years, the two bodies have complemented each other’s existence from well before the consolidation. The college is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The college offers several undergraduate and graduate courses in medical education, biomedical research and patient care. It is a private, not-for-profit 4-year or above degree-granting institution that enrolls under 1,000 students each year. Average endowment per full-time enrolled student was calculated in 2012 at over $70,000.

The center offers extensive research opportunities, with several clinical trials being conducted for a variety of conditions ranging from Huntington’s disease and Cystic Fibrosis to Multiple Sclerosis and Fibromyalgia.
