SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Also known as Downstate Medical Center

101 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY

The SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York, is one of the only four nursing schools in the state to offer Master’s degree programs in all the advanced nursing practice roles - clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and nurse anesthetists.

The mission of this school is simply to be a center of excellence. They aim to achieve this through empowering their graduates to be multicultural leaders to effect changes in health policy so that urban communities can benefit from “culturally competent care.”

The College of Nursing was set up in 1967 to offer a baccalaureate program in nursing. The RN to B.S.N. program is one of the largest of its kind in the state, admitting more than 100 RNs every year. The college also offers an accelerated BSN program, which is a 15-month course. Aside from these two programs, other degree tracks include: Clinical Specialist, Nurse Practitioner and Master's in Public Health and Master of Science in any of the four advanced practice roles.

The Brooklyn-based college charges tuition of $390 per credit for in-state students, which is nominally lower than other comparable institutions in the state. Out of state tuition is $695 per credit. Program credits vary from 41 to 61. Financial aid is made available to qualifying students in the form of grants, loans and scholarships.

On-campus accommodation is available in the Resident Halls, which are fully furnished and equipped with state-of-the art conveniences and technology.

There is also a work-study program that allows real-life experience while studying.
