University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)

1111 Hwy 75, Macy, NE

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is a highly reputed, nationally ranked, four-years-and-above, degree-granting academic medical center. Located in Omaha, UNMC’s mission is to “improve the health of Nebraska through premier educational programs, innovative research, the highest quality patient care, and outreach to underserved populations.”

UNMC offers over 25 programs to more than 3,600 students. It is part of the University of Nebraska System and consists of six colleges and three institutes that offer courses in primary care (ranked 6th in the United States by U.S. News and World Report), pharmacy, physical therapy, nursing, dentistry, etc.

UNMC’s rich history began in 1880 with the state’s first medical college; a dental college was set up in 1903; the pharmacy college was established in 1908; and the College of Nursing was founded in 1917. With nearly 100 years of experience in the nursing education industry, UNMC’s nursing programs stretch across several communities, including Omaha, Norfolk, Scottsbluff, Kearney and Lincoln.

In 2007, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges recommended UNMC for 10 years of reaccreditation, along with an expansion of its programs to distance education and degree completion.

The highlight of UNMC’s expansion efforts is the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, which was built at a cost of over $52 million – all of it collected through public donations.

Over 70% of the students currently enrolled in the various programs receive some sort of financial aid, with the average aid amount per student being between $6,600 and $9,800.
