Oklahoma City University, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a private four year institution that founded in 1904 and was originally known as Epworth University. The school was built by Anton Classen, a local developer who had been active in the construction of the city and desired a Methodist university in the area to promote Methodist ideology and faith.
OCU closed in 1911 and was reopened in 1922 when Oklahoma Methodist University moved from its location in Guthrie to Oklahoma City and absorbed the faculty from the nearby defunct Fort Worth University. The school experienced a decline in enrollment and services during World War II, but found increased numbers at the end of the war, resulting in rapid growth and expansion.
