About
Alabama State University, located in Montgomery, Alabama, was founded in 1856 when it was known as the Lincoln Normal School, established by nine former slaves after the Civil War to provide education to recently freed black residents of Alabama. By 1887 the school was moved to Montgomery, but was forced to change its name to the Normal School for Colored Students. Over the course of the schools history, it became a junior college, teaching college, a state college and finally in 1969 became known as Alabama State University. Over the years the school has upgraded and added many facilities to allow for the teaching of new programs and the ability to handle increased enrollment. The school is dedicated to providing students an excellent education and quality services, allowing for a variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities.
Academics
Alabama State University offers students a variety of programs to choose from in order to meet their academic and career goals. These programs take approximately four years to complete and result in a bachelor's degree. Minor degrees are also available, allowing students to pursue a secondary area of interest or augment their major. The school also has a number of master degree programs that must be applied for separately and have requirements that include having earned an undergraduate degree.

Admissions and Financial Aid
Students interested in enrollment at Alabama State University must complete the application for admission, as well as submit transcripts and standardized test scores. Admission requirements regarding GPA scale inversely with ACT or SAT test scores, with a higher GPA requiring a lower test scores and vice versa. Once submitted, student applications will be reviewed, and when decision is rendered notified of their admission.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants, scholarships and work study programs. Students in need of financial assistance will provide their financial information through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which in turn will produce a student aid report (SAR) which will be used to determine a student's financial need, aid program eligibility, and monetary awards. Students may be required to submit additional information to ensure that the SAR is true and accurate. Students must reapply for aid at the start of every school year.
Athletics
The Alabama State University Hornets participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) through the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Athletic programs provide a forum for healthy competition, and encourage students to develop skills such as discipline, teamwork and good health habits which are applicable to one's daily professional and personal life. Students also experience the camaraderie associated with working with others toward a single goal, and the successes and failures in pursuit of those goals.
