Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU)

Northwestern Oklahoma State University, located in Alva, Oklahoma, began operations in 1897 as a normal school designed to educate teacher and was known as the Northwestern Territorial Normal School. By 1919 the school became a four year institution, changing its name to Northwestern Oklahoma Teachers College. In 1939, the school expanded its focus once more, offering a liberal arts education alongside its traditional education program and changing its name to Northwestern State College.

In 1951 the school was approved for credit transfer to the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University for the purposes of pursuing a master's degree, and in 1954 became authorized to offer its own master level programs. Over the next two decades the school began to add more graduate programs and in 1974 changed its name to its current. The school operates satellite campuses in the cities of Enid and Woodward.
