The University of Alabama (UA) is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. UA has an excellent faculty and programs, and has been ranked among the nation's top 50 public universities multiple times in recent years. The university offers academic degrees in more than 200 fields of study at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. UA offers many special programs to enhance the university learning experience, including an Honors College, international seminars, and freshmen learning communities, among others. Professional programs in law and rural medicine are also offered.

History

The Alabama Territory was authorized in 1818, and by 1820 Alabama became as state and its "seminary of learning" was established as The University of the State of Alabama. The state's first capital, Tuscaloosa, was selected as the university's location. In 1831 the campus had seven buildings and its first students were enrolled. In 1837, the university became one of the first institutions of higher learning in the country to offer engineering classes. In 1859, the Medical College of the University opened in Mobile, Alabama. In 1860, the university became a military school.

The first women students enrolled in 1893, and the first African-American student, a woman, enrolled in 1956.

Traditions

One of the oldest traditions at the University of Alabama is "Crimson Tide," the nickname of the school's athletic teams and a reference to their red jerseys.  The name purportedly came from a sports editor at the Birmingham Age-Herald newspaper, who used "Crimson Tide" to describe an Alabama-Auburn football game played in 1907.  The game was played in muddy conditions and Auburn was favored to win.  According to history, the UA team played a strong game in the "red mud" and earned the name "Crimson Tide."

Another tradition at UA is the association of the elephant as the university's mascot. This tradition is also tied to football. In 1930, a sports writer for the Atlanta Journal described an Alabama-Mississippi football game during which there was a "distant rumble" as the UA team approached.  The writer reported that a fan in the stands yelled, "Hold your horses, the elephants are coming!"  From that point on, the UA varsity football team was often referred to as the "Red Elephants."
