About
The University of Texas Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is the result of an academic partnership that took place in 1991 to meet community and area needs regarding post-secondary education. Originally a branch campus of University Texas Pan America, the school was separated and given university status with the University of Texas System. Shortly after its formation the school partnered with Texas Southmost College, a community college in Brownsville that was established in 1926 to expand assist one another in providing educational opportunities to residents of south Texas which had been lacking otherwise. The partnership between the two schools is expected to end some time before 2015 due to vote by the Texas Southmost College school board wishing to return it to a separate institution.
Academics
UTB/TSC has a large number of programs that provide a variety of opportunities to students. Due to the variety of programs available, students may pursue the academic or career programs that best suits their future goals. Academic programs allow for associate, bachelor, master and doctoral degrees, with enrollment requirements becoming more complex with each level of degree. Associate programs take approximately two years to complete, bachelor degrees take four, master degree programs between one and two years, the same for doctoral programs. Students may choose to continue their education at UTB/TSC once a degree is earned, or they may transfer to another institution to continue their education.
Career and technical training programs are also offered, resulting in a certificate or associate degree, allowing students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation at the entry level. Students enrolled in such a program will have learned the skills and abilities necessary to enter the workforce as a professional and perform all tasks and duties required of him or her. These programs take between one and two years to complete.

Admissions and FInancial Aid
Students interested in enrollment at UTB/TSC must submit an application which will be reviewed and compared to the new admissions standards put forth by the school in 2012. Student applications will be undergo evaluation, and if they meet the schools standards, a notification for admission will be sent to the students. Students applying for associate or certificate programs may do so through Texas Southmost College, whose restrictions for admission are few.
Financial aid is available in the form of grants, loans, work study programs, veterans benefits programs and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the resulting student aid report (SAR) from which will be used by the school to identify the student's need, eligibility for programs, and the monetary awards he or she is entitled to. Students may also apply for merit scholarships offered by the school, or for external scholarships provided by private groups or funds and offered for a variety of reasons. Students may be asked to provide additional financial documentation, such as tax returns, prior to the disbursement of funds in order to ensure that the information on the SAR is accurate.
Athletics
The UTB/TSC Scorpions participate in a small number of intercollegiate athletics through National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the Red River Athletic Conference. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics will participate in an atmosphere of healthy competition against rival schools, developing skills and habits, such as discipline, teamwork, and good health, which are applicable to one's academic, professional and personal life. Additionally, students form bonds out of camaraderie, working with one another toward a common goal and experiencing success and failure together. Athletic programs have different start dates throughout the year and interested students should visit the athletic department to find out when tryouts begin.
