The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a large, multicultural public research university. UTEP boasts a majority Hispanic student population, and is proud of its multicultural heritage and historical location. UTEP offers 75 bachelor’s degrees, 78 master’s degrees and 19 doctoral degrees. Many service learning opportunities are available at UTEP, which help the community and give students practical work experience.

The Simulation Center at UTEP offers innovative learning experiences to health services students, allowing them to practice in a safe, clinical environment that mimic’s real-world experience. History

UTEP was founded as a small mining school in 1914.  There were 27 students enrolled in the “Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy.” They rode a streetcar or walked across dusty desert to reach the school that was founded on the site of the old El Paso Military Institute. The name was changed several times as the curriculum developed and enrollment increased, until it became The University of Texas at El Paso.

Academics

The academic calendar for the University of Texas at El Paso follows the semester format, with fall, spring and summer semesters. There is a 4-week “Maymester” in the month of May. The summer semester is divided into two sessions: Summer I, and Summer II. The first summer session begins in early June, and the second summer session begins in early July.

Student Life

Students at UTEP are encouraged to become involved in one of the more than 150 clubs or organizations available on campus. Community Life

El Paso is a historical location and a bi-national community. Students at UTEP can visit El Paso’s Centennial Museum to view artwork by some of the area’s most renowned artists. On campus, the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts offers exhibits of contemporary art from students and internationally-recognized artists. Additional artworks are displayed in the UTEP Library, which also houses more than one million books and microforms, among its collections.

Students seeking more culture on campus will enjoy the Union Gallery exhibits, many music recitals, dinner theatre performances, cinema, and a range of social and cultural events that are also open to the El Paso community.
