Physical Education Degree

Towson University (TU) is a large, comprehensive public university near the Baltimore metro area in the suburban community of Towson, Maryland. TU is nationally recognized for many of its academic programs, including those in the arts and sciences, business, communications, education, health professions, and computer information systems, among others. TU is situated on a 328-acre campus that is attractively landscaped with woods and streams, and characterized by buildings of both traditional and modern architecture.
More than 60 undergraduate majors are available at Towson University, with 44 master's programs and four doctoral programs. The most popular undergraduate programs at TU are Business Administration, Mass Communications, Psychology, Nursing and Elementary Education. The most popular TU graduate programs are Human Resources Development, Teaching, Reading Education, Applied Information Technology and Instructional Technology. Towson University is the largest producer of teachers in Maryland.

History
Towson University was founded in 1866 as the State Normal School. It was founded in Baltimore, but moved its location to Towson in 1915. In 1935, the school changed its name to State Teachers College at Towson. In 1963, the name changed to Towson State College to reflect the development of a broader and more varied curriculum over the years. In 1976, the name was changed again to Towson State University to reflect its status in the University System of Maryland. In 1997, the name was updated to its current Towson University.

The academic calendar for Towson University follows a semester format, with fall, spring and summer semesters. There is a short "Mini-mester" in the month of January. The summer semester is actually a "Trimester" - a semester comprised of three shorter sessions.
