History
The University of Nevada - Las Vegas was founded in 1957. In 1954, that extension program became the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada, shortened to "Nevada Southern." Students at Nevada Southern chose "Rebel" as their athletics name and mascot to reflect their wish to become independent from UNR. Nevada Southern held its first classes on its own campus in 1957.
