History

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered the same year that George Washington was inaugurated as president (1789), and first opened its doors to students in 1795.  It was the nation's first public university, and also the only one to award degrees in the 18^th century.

Student Life

Students at Carolina can get involved in the more than 600 student groups, clubs and organizations available that focus on politics, the arts, public service, recreation, academics, research, and much more. Chapel Hill is situated in the rolling, wooded hills of North Carolina.  It is located three hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains and equidistance from the Atlantic coast.  Chapel Hill is one of three points in The Research Triangle, an area that is noteworthy for being a top location to live, do business and conduct scientific research.
