The nickname for the University of Oklahoma's athletics teams is "Sooners." The term "Sooners" is a historical reference to some of the land "Boomers" or settlers who came to the Oklahoma Territory to make a claim for unassigned, free land in the late 1880s. The area of Norman, Oklahoma was one region of the territory available for claims. One rule to rightfully claim a lot of land stipulated that all participants were to initiate their claim on the same date or at the same time. Those who tried to stake a claim too soon were called "Sooners." Over time, the term "Sooner" also came to mean a person who was progressive, energetic, ambitious, and prosperous - a go-getter.
