Bronx Community College of the City University of New York, located in Bronx, New York, was founded in 1957 to meet the need of the area. The school was established by groups and individuals in the area that felt the Bronx needed higher education facilities. The school operated from a number of temporary locations until 1973 when it was given the New York University's University Heights Campus, which was sold to the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York due to the threat of bankruptcy. The school overlooks the Harlem River and is situated on 55 acres of land. The school is one of the many schools that comprise the CUNY system, one of the largest education systems in the United States. The school is constantly updating and refining curriculum to remain up to date and better serve the evolving needs of the community.
Academics
Bronx Community College CUNY offers over 40 programs of study that may result in an associate degree or certificate. The programs offered are either academic programs or career and technical programs. Academic programs allow students to complete their freshman and sophomore years at a low cost. Students who complete an academic program will be able to transfer to a four year institution to complete their education at a four year institution. Career and technical programs prepare students for entry into the workforce by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate as professionals in their field of study. Graduates are able to immediately seek employment at entry level positions. Certificate programs provide an education similar to career and technical program, but generally lack the general education courses in their curriculum, resulting in a short overall program.

Admissions and Financial Aid
Bronx Community College CUNY has an open enrollment policy allowing any individual who is a high school graduate or GED holder to enter the school by completing the admissions application. Students interested in enrollment must complete the application and provide all pertinent transcripts in order to be admitted. Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and work study programs. Students in need of aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the resulting information from which will be used to determine eligibility and awards. Some students may also qualify for scholarships, typically requiring a separate application and often awarded for reasons other than need.
Athletics
Bronx Community College CUNY participates in a number of intercollegiate athletic programs. These programs help provide a healthy atmosphere of competition and allow for the growth of school spirit among students both participating in and watching events. Additionally, such programs help develop skills useful for student in their academic and professional careers. These skills include teamwork, discipline, and healthy habits. Students interested in joining one of the school's intercollegiate teams may attend tryouts, the dates of which are posted every summer for the subsequent year.
