Los Angeles Valley College, located in Valley Glen, California, was founded in 1959 to serve the growing needs of the residents of San Fernando Valley. Originally part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, LAVC along with 8 other community and technical colleges joined the Los Angeles Community College District with its establishment in 1969. Throughout the years the college has grown, both in size and ins program offerings, renovating buildings and offering state of the art facilities as needed. The school currently serves approximately 20,000 students a year.

In addition to academic and vocational offerings, the school is host to cultural and community events throughout the year, as well as a supporter of the arts through shows at its Art Gallery, concerts put together by the music department and plays performed through the theater department.

Academics

Los Angeles Valley College provides students with academic and career opportunities through its large number of programs. Academic programs are designed to offer the first two years of a four year education, and result in an associate degree as well as possible transfer to a four year institution. Career and vocational programs can have varying lengths based on whether a student pursues a certificate or associate degree. Individuals who complete a career or vocational program will be eligible for work at the entry level in their field of study.

Adult education courses provide adults wishing to return to school the opportunity to begin taking classes while providing a flexible schedule. Continuing education courses provide professionals in need of courses to renew certifications or licenses the opportunity to fulfill such requirements locally, also with flexible scheduling options.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Admission to Los Angeles Valley College requires individuals to be at least 18 years of age, or have graduated high school. Students may have a GED or equivalent in lieu of a high school diploma. Costs for courses are dependent on whether students are a resident of California, out of state, or international.

Financial aid is available from federal, state and institutional sources. Students interested in obtaining financial aid must establish eligibility through the student aid report resulting from the completion and submissions of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and by obtaining a federal PIN number. Once the information is provided and received, the LAVC will review the documentation and award financial aid based on need.  Need is determined by checking available funds, both of the individual and his or her parents, and how much they are able to cover tuition costs. Financial aid awards will assist on covering the difference.

Athletic

The Los Angeles Valley College Monarchs participate in several athletic associations and have a variety of sports programs. The Monarchs play in the Western State Conference, the California Community College Athletic Association, the Southern California Football Association, and the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association. The school believes that athletic programs are an essential part of a well rounded college education.
