Nursing Program

The nursing program at Hiram College prepares students for careers in hospitals, convalescent centers, clinics, home care, and physician's offices. The program focuses on knowledge, techniques and procedures for promoting health, providing care for the sick, disabled, infirmed, or other individuals or groups. Program courses include: administration of medication and treatments, assisting and physician during treatments and examinations, referring patients to physicians and other health care specialists, and planning education for health maintenance. Hiram College began its history in 1850 in Hiram, Ohio. Its founder, Amos Sutten Hayden, created a non-sectarian co-educational institution wherein men and women from diverse backgrounds learned freely in an egalitarian setting. Hiram College was listed among Loren Pope's Colleges That Change Lives.

President James A. Garfield attended Hiram College then returned to teach and eventually was made principal prior to the start of the civil war. Hiram College has a rich history and is unique in its break down for semesters.

Each year is broken down into two 15 week semesters, which is further segmented into a twelve week portion offering 3 classes, and a 3 week portion focusing on a single class. The three week course can vary based on the course of study; it can be used for an internship or short term study abroad opportunities. The system, known as the Hiram Plan, has been well received by students and graduates.

Academics

Hiram College offers three formats for learning. Students can take the traditional approach and take their studies during the day, weekend courses through the weekend college program that meets every other week, or enter the graduate studies program.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Students Applying to Hiram College must complete an application along with all ancillary material, including letters of recommendation, transcripts and test scores along with a personal interview. Once completed and submitted the material will be reviewed and a response given within 3 weeks. Hiram College also provides financial aid assistance to qualified students. Student should visit or contact the financial aid office to determine eligibility and resolve any questions.
