About
Sarah Lawrence College, located in Bronxville, New York, was founded in 1926 by William Van Duzer Lawrence in remembrance of his wife. The school was modelled after the Oxford educational model, and was originally formed as a women's educational institution. Students were originally required to participate in feminine instruction courses, such as the application of makeup, but that fell by the wayside as the school further developed its curriculum and liberal arts approach. At one point the school was in discussions to merge with Princeton University though the merger never materialized. In 1968 the school became a coeducational institution admitting both men and women.
