History

Founded in 1890 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, the first students enrolled for studies in 1891. Established shortly after the Land Run of 1889, the school opened with no buildings or books, and early classes were held in local churches.

In 1894, the first academic building was completed. This building, called "Old Central," is still located on campus OSU's main campus. In 1896, the first six students graduated.

In 1957, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College was renamed Oklahoma State University. The school established technical branches in Oklahoma City and Okmulgee. Over the years, many of these technical branches merged with other colleges or schools to form the various colleges and campuses that are now part of OSU.

Student Life

University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), is a top public research university that has pioneered many "firsts." It was one of the first institutions of higher learning west of the Mississippi River to grant doctoral degrees (the first it awarded was in 1896). UNL was also the first university to establish ecology as an academic discipline, and its campus is a perfect representation of nature, with beautiful arboreta and gardens. One of the earliest universities to celebrate the arts and literature, UNL gave birth to the literary magazine "Prairie Schooner." It also created foundations for the University of Nebraska Press and the Sheldon Museum of Art.

UNL has many well-funded research projects, led by faculty who are recognized scientists and scholars. In addition to its research and graduate programs, UNL is known for its excellent undergraduate programs. Some of these programs include the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience Program (UCARE), which connects research faculty to students for collaboration on independent study projects. Outstanding students who wish to develop leadership skills can enroll leadership programs in the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management.

The entire undergraduate student body can participate in the Nebraska Colloquium, which involves the UNL academic community in an annual intellectual discourse on a topic of importance. Additionally, the University Honors Program hosts Honors Forum talks on world issues.

History

The University of Nebraska - Lincoln was established in 1869, and covered four city blocks. University Hall was the first campus building, which began to crumble by the time a second building was constructed in 1886. The conditions of the prairie were quite harsh, killing many of the trees and flowers that were planted on campus. In the 1890s, the university constructed its library from stronger materials that would withstand the elements of the prairie.

In 1873, the university established a nearby farm campus, and later an experimental research station in North Platte.  In 1902, the Medical College of Omaha merged with the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. In 1909, UNL was admitted to the Association of American Universities.  In 1906, John D. Rockefeller contributed funds for the construction of a student activity center, known as the Temple Building, among others.

On campus housing is available, as well as a variety of dining services. In addition, there is now a campus-based "Campus NightLife" that provides safe, free activities for students wishing to enjoy a nightlife within their campus community. Some of the sponsored events and entertainments include the outdoor music concert called "Midwest Acoustic Fest," the "Husker Watch Party," that allows students to view Huskers athletics games on the Jumbo Screen at Memorial Stadium, and many other themed and seasonal events.

The University of New Haven was founded in 1920 at New Haven, Connecticut and was originally located on Yale's campus. In 1960 the school moved to it West Haven location. UNH is a private university, and is considered a top tier liberal arts college. The University of Akron (UA), located in Ohio, is a public research university. UA offers 300 undergraduate academic degree programs and also many programs at the graduate levels. History

In 1870, the Ohio Universalist Convention founded the University of Akron was founded as "Buchtel College." Originally a church-focused school, the emphasis shifted to non-denominational interests and curricula by 1907. In 1913, the trustees created the Municipal University of Akron, which became the University of Akron (UA) in 1926.  In 1959, the University of Akron became the fifth university in Ohio to offer a doctoral degree. In 1967, UA became a state university.  In the 1990s, a new campus was developed, with 9 new buildings reaching completion in 2004. In 2008, the on-campus sports stadium, InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, was completed. In 2010, UA was named an Ohio Center of Excellence for its biomedicine, healthcare, and enabling technologies programs.

South Georgia Technical College offers an outstanding education at an affordable price. The college has two campuses with one in Americus and the other in Cordele. The cost of in-state tuition is $2,250 a year.

Santa Fe Community College is found in Gainesville, Florida, and is part of the state’s public school system. For a few select majors, Santa Fe Community College offers bachelor’s degrees.  Associate degrees are available at SFCC for students who are not interested in transferring to a four year institution.  Career-oriented degrees such as Fire Science Technology and Legal Assisting are available for qualifying students.  Both degree tracks are intended to help make graduates more marketable to prospective employers. Four year degrees available to prospective SFCC students include, Early Childhood Education, Health Services Administration, and Nursing.  The bulk of the degree programs at Santa Fe Community College are two year degrees given the curricular design of the school. Located in the large city of Gainesville, next to the University of Florida, there are plenty of things to do in your off time. Gainesville is filled with clubs, restaurants, and other amenities that tend to keep students busy when they aren’t working on their academic careers. In addition, Santa Fe Community College has sports teams that carry a relatively large following. There are currently 21,030 students attending Santa Fe Community College, and in 2012 tuition was $2,167 for in state students. For out of state students, that number jumped more than triple to $8,169. Santa Fe Community College offers its students financial aid in the form of federal loans, work study, and pell grants in order to help offset these upfront financial costs. About South Florida State College, located in Avon Park, Florida, was founded in 1965 and has an annual enrollment of over 16,000 students. The school was originally known as South Florida Community College, but changed its name in 2012 when it followed many other two year institutions in the state and began offering a limited selection of four year programs.

The school operates three campuses in the counties of Highland, DeSoto, and Hardee.  SFSC is one of the many schools that comprise the Florida College System.
Academics South Florida State College offers a variety of programs that allow students to choose which path is right for them, though it primarily focuses on community workforce development through career training programs that offer an education in the industries and areas that are in the highest demand in the service area.

Programs take between one and two years to complete and result in a degree or certificate. Individuals may choose to pursue academic transfer by completing a curriculum that mirrors the first two years of a four year program, followed by applying for transfer to a four year institution to complete their bachelor's degree. Students applying to the supervision and management bachelor program will apply separately and completer all four years at SFSC.

Chipola College gives students the opportunity to earn either a two year associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree (in addition to a variety of certification programs) at a public institution, which makes it a very appealing option to students who aren’t sure where their college career is going to take them yet. Located in Marianna, Florida, students are often attracted to the warm weather and the quaint small town feel of northern Florida. The town of Marianna has a population of 6,230 and is home to several tourist destinations, such as the Florida Caverns State Park and the Chattahoochee River, both of which are near U.S. Civil War locations.

In 2012, in-state tuition was extremely low at $3,100. However, for out of state students, tuition more than doubled to the rate of $8,657, which makes it less of an appealing choice. There are a wide range of programs to study, including Criminal Justice, Child Care Management, Business Administration, and Teacher Education. Chipola College has quite a few on campus amenities which make life easier for students, including sports teams, a food court, a campus radio and campus bookstore. All of these help to enhance the experience of students and make their time at Chipola College more enjoyable for everyone.

Most students at Chipola College are receiving some type of federal aid, and there a few different types of scholarships available in addition to the traditional student loan packages offered by the federal government. For students that qualify, there are Florida’ Bright Futures Scholarships, Florida Medallion Scholarships, and Florida Academic Scholarships. Georgia Northwestern Technical College, located in Rome, Georgia, was created in 2008 through the merger of two pre-existing technical schools, Coosa Valley Technical College and Northwestern Technical College. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, located in Valdosta, Georgia, was established in 2010 through the merger of the East Central Technical College and Valdosta Technical College. The merger was approved as part of a number of mergers taking place throughout the state in order to consolidate resources and geographic realignment. History
St. Johns River State College was founded in Palatka, Florida in 1958 to serve the Putnam, Clay and St. Johns counties. SJRSC has currently has campuses in Palatka, St. Augustine and Orange Park and services over 100,000 students. Previously known as St. Johns River Community College, the name was changed in 2011 when the school began offering bachelor's degrees. The school is one of the many colleges that comprise the Florida College System, which includes a number of, two year and hybrid colleges throughout the state.

Academics
St. Johns River State College offers associate's degree and technical certificates for a variety of programs. Additionally SJRSC offers bachelor's degrees in early childhood development and organizational management. Brevard Community College, located in Cocoa, Florida, is a two year public institution founded in 1960. Initially known as Brevard Junior College, in 1963 the school merged with Carver Junior College, a nearby public two year college that provided education to African-American residents, expanding its service area and resulting in a name change its current. Athens Technical College, located in Athens Georgia, was founded in 1958 when it was first known as the Athens Area Vocational-Technical School. The school was renamed in 1987 to Athens Area Technical Institute as part of its expanding role in the community. Serving the Tri-Valley area of San Francisco, or Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin, Las Positas College (LPC) provides commuter students both transfer curriculums and degree programs in a number of career-ready areas of study.

Savannah Technical College, located in Savannah, Georgia, was founded in 1929 through the sponsorship of the city council. At the time institution was known as the Opportunity School, which quickly outgrew its facilities and requiring expansion. Over the next few decades the school added programs and moved to large facilities allowing a larger number of students to participate in the school's offerings. In 1959 the school combined with other recently established schools to form the Savannah Area Vocational-Technical School, which served the counties of Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Long and Liberty. By 1997 the school became part of State Board of Technical and Adult Education and in 2000 changed its name to Savannah Technical College. Valencia College, formerly "Valencia Community College" is a top-ranking two-year college for the number of Associate's degrees earned.  Students attending Valencia will receive the same quality of education as they would at a state university at a lower cost and with smaller classes.  In addition to offering daytime classes, Valencia also offers night and weekend classes at four campuses or online.  The "Flex Start" program allows students to begin their course of study at any time. 

Students may qualify for a job upon completion of their two-year degree or transfer to a four-year university as a junior.  In fact, students who complete an Associate's Degree at Valencia may join the "Direct Connect to UCF" program for joint academic advising and guaranteed admission to the University of Central Florida (UCF).

Valencia College was established more than 40 years ago to serve individuals, businesses and public agencies in the Central Florida area.

Academics

Valencia College follows the semester system, though they are referred to as "terms" (fall, spring and summer terms).  The fall term begins in late August and runs to late December. The spring term runs from early January to early May.  The summer term runs from early May to early August.

Valencia offers several "pre-major" programs and the Associate of Arts degree that guarantees admission to Florida State University.  Additionally, Valencia has 33 Associate of Science degree programs offered as transfer plans to pursue a bachelor's degree or as a direct-to-career plan with a job placement rate of 93 to 95 percent.

Student Life

Valencia College has more than 60 student groups, clubs and organizations.  In addition to career interest groups or organizations for African-American, Latino, Caribbean and Muslim students, there are also groups for leadership development and those that focus on movies, books, art or animals, among many others.

Because Valencia College is a commuter school, it does not offer student housing at any of its campuses or centers.  Students are responsible for finding their own housing around any of Valencia's campuses.  Additionally, Valencia holds housing fairs on campus every year where students will find rental information and roommate listings.  This information is also available through Valencia's Student Development office.

Students who don't live within walking or biking distance of one of Valencia's campuses will need to have a car or use the Lynx bus system that operates in Orange and Osceola counties.

Traditions

Matador Day is a festival held on the Valencia College campuses each fall.  Even though Valencia doesn't currently have competitive sports teams, the matador is still Valencia's mascot and Matador Day is a popular event that includes music, food, games and contests.

Daytona State College, located in Daytona Beach, Florida, was founded in 1957 as Daytona Beach Junior College. The school merged with Volusia County Community College in 1965, and changed its name in 1971 to Daytona Beach Community College. Over the years the school expanded to offer more programs and unified the two campuses.

By 2006 the school began offering bachelor degrees, and in 2008 changed its name yet again, this time to Daytona State College to better reflect the changes and offerings the school provides.

Daytona State College is part of the Florida College System which is comprised of a large number of two and four year public institutions. The school has been an active participant in local development, offering support in economic and cultural development.

Daytona State College provides certificates, associate degrees and bachelor's degrees to aspiring students. Lakes Region Community College offers programs that prepare students for academic transfer or career training for entry into the workforce. Students interested in academic transfer will complete the first two years of a four year education at LRCC, followed by applying for transfer to a four year institution in order to complete a bachelor's degree. Transfer requirements vary by school and students should meet with an academic adviser in order to develop a curriculum that best meets the criterion of the school or schools. Indian River State College, located in Fort Pierce, Florida, is one of Florida's many public institutions. The school was established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College, and renamed Indian River Community College in 1970 to better reflect the school's offerings. The school once again changed its name, this time to its current, once it began offering bachelor degrees as part of its curriculum. The school serves several areas through branch campuses and online courses. IRSC offers a number of different programs that result in either a bachelor or associate degree or certificate. Originally, the school provided a two year education as a community college, but with the introduction of nine bachelor degree programs, with the planned addition of more programs in the future, the school has expanded its educational role within Florida's public post-secondary institutions. Located in Panama City Florida, Gulf Coast State College (formerly known as Gulf Coast Community College) is a public institution that is open for two year associate’s degrees. GCSC is well known for its accommodating programs that allow you to put your schedule together as you’d like so that you can fit in time for your work and academics. With a large number of online offerings, GCSC provides a high quality and flexible environment for each individual student.

GCSC has an enrollment of 10,909, and is a cheap collegiate option at $2,569 in tuition in 2012. However, for out of state students, that number is not as inviting—out of state students paid $9,334 in the same year for their tuition. Most students are eligible for loans from the federal government as well as pell grants and other forms of assistance that can offset a significant portion of the upfront cost.

In the classroom, GCSC keeps building upon the flexibility that its known for. Many of its course offerings take place both in the physical classroom and online, which provides students the opportunity to work and finish projects on their own schedule. Seminole State College of Florida, located in Sanford, Florida, was founded in 1965 as Seminole Junior College. Within ten years of its founding the school exceeded 7000 enrolled students and proceeded to change its name to Seminole Community College.

The school is art of the Florida College System, and like many community colleges within the system, the school began offering a limited number of bachelor degree programs in 2008. As a result of the change, the school once again changed its name to the current to better reflect its new offerings. SSC currently serves approximately 30,000 students a year and operates four campuses in Seminole County.

Seminole State offers a variety of programs. These programs may result in a certificate, associate degree or bachelor's degree.  Certificate and associate programs are designed to prepare individuals for immediate placement in the workforce by providing the skills and experience necessary to enter at the entry level.
