What is Turf Management?

Turf management is the area of study and expertise that deals with the maintenance of large fields, either public or private, for the purposes of growth of grass of varying types for either aesthetic or practical reasons. Individuals will learn the proper methods and technologies used to ensure that the areas under the supervision of the manager are well maintained and up to the standards demanded by the employer or client. The field requires education and training to be considered for employment, particularly because of the variety of factors that can positively and negatively impact growth and how to utilize that knowledge.

It should come as no surprise, the academic field of study of turf grass or artificial turf is not new.  In fact, Penn State has been conferring turf grass science degrees for nearly 100 years within their agronomy department.  The skills involved in becoming a turf scientist make this field a niche science with long-term staying power.

Skills a turf scientist must learn include weed control, soil chemistry, soil science, integrated pest control, irrigation, field design, and maintenance techniques.  Given the nature of this degree program, it is ever-more important to link academic work with hands-on learning opportunities.

Thus, students in a turf management program will often intern with a sports organization, golf course, or property manager.  The internship allows students to ply their trade in real-time under the direct supervision of a trained turf scientist and link classroom learning with practical issues related to turf grass.
