History

Founded in 1890 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, the first students enrolled for studies in 1891. Established shortly after the Land Run of 1889, the school opened with no buildings or books, and early classes were held in local churches.

In 1894, the first academic building was completed. This building, called "Old Central," is still located on campus OSU's main campus. In 1896, the first six students graduated.

In 1957, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College was renamed Oklahoma State University. The school established technical branches in Oklahoma City and Okmulgee. Over the years, many of these technical branches merged with other colleges or schools to form the various colleges and campuses that are now part of OSU.

About The University of Central Oklahoma, located in Edmond, Oklahoma, is the oldest post-secondary educational institution in the state, having been founded in 1890. The school was originally a normal school established with the purpose of educating individuals in the methods of teaching to further the territory's educational system. The school was built on 40 acres donated by the territorial legislature, and with additional fund the first class of 23 students began their studies in 1891.

By 1904 the school had become Central State Normal School, though statehood for the Oklahoma territory would still be 3 years away. By 1919 the school became a four year degree granting teacher's college and by 1939 became a full fledged college. Between 1954 and 1971 the school was given the authority to confer a variety of master degrees, resulting in the school becoming recognized as a university and taking on the name Central State University.

On the school's 100 year anniversary the name was once again changed, this time to its current. The school has grown from its humble roots, currently serving nearly 16,000 students on a 300 acre campus.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University, located in Weatherford, Oklahoma, was founded in 1901 as Southwestern Normal School. Operations began in 1903 at both the preparatory school and the normal school. By 1920, the preparatory facility was shut down and in its place was established a bachelor degree granting program. By World War II the school had grown, resulting in several name changes and the addition of additional programs, including the school of pharmacy. In 1953 SWOSU began offering masters degrees, and received its current name in 1974. The school merged with Sayre Junior College in 1987, expanding its offerings, facilities, and area of operation.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University, located in Alva, Oklahoma, began operations in 1897 as a normal school designed to educate teacher and was known as the Northwestern Territorial Normal School. About
Rogers State University, located in Claremore, Oklahoma, was founded in 1909, two years after Oklahoma became a state, and was known as Eastern University Preparatory School. By 1917 the school had closed due to changing educational needs in the area, and was reopened in 1919 as the Oklahoma Military Academy. OMA operated until 1971, when the growing needs of the community had the school changed to Claremore Junior College. As the school grew, it once again changed its name to better represent its service area and mission, become Rogers State College in 1982. In 1996 Rogers State College merged with the University Center in Tulsa, forming Rogers University, though the campuses separated two years later, resulting in Rogers University becoming part of the Oklahoma University System and being renamed Rogers State University, obtaining bachelor degree granting status in 2000.

Athletics
Rogers State College Hillcats participates in a number of intercollegiate athletics through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Intercollegiate athletics provide students a healthy atmosphere of competition and a forum from which they may develop useful skills for their personal, academic and professional lives.
