What is Medical Transcription?

An individual working in the field of medical transcription will be required to take recorded notes by physicians and other medical professionals and transfer them to digital transcripts available for access in the future. The work requires individuals to carefully listen to notes provided, and accurately document them. The need for accuracy is high due to the transcripts being used in patient histories, with errors possibly having negative results in future treatment or care. Employment is normally offered through specialized offices or medical centers such as clinics or hospitals.

While it is true that medical transcriptionists are not currently required to have postsecondary degree, many hiring managers prefer applicants with college training.  The types of colleges that offer training and degree programs for a medical transcriptionist include: community colleges, trade schools, career colleges, vocational schools, and online colleges.  Medical transcription programs from these schools include a 12-month certificate program or associate degree.

Pioneer Pacific College, located in Wilsonville, Oregon, was founded in 1981 when it was known as Skilltronics, Inc.. The school provided training programs in the growing electronics industry. By 1983 the school relocated to Wilsonville and by 1989 was purchased by Pacific Education Corporation and renamed to the current name. Olney Central College (OCC) at Olney, Illinois, is part of Illinois Eastern Community Colleges group of public community colleges. Moraine Park Technical College, located Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, was founded in 1912 and currently serves residents in the counties of Fond du Lac and Green Lake, most of Dodge County and Washington County, as well as portions of six other surrounding counties. The school is one of sixteen that comprises the Wisconsin Technical College System. Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, Minnesota, was founded in 1969 through the approval of the state legislature and began operating in 1970 at a site formerly operated  by the University of Minnesota. Lake Land College (LLC) is found in Mattoon, Illinois, a city with a population of 18,555 and famous for its railroads. The city holds a number of different events and activities every year, including Bagelfest every July, which brings a large fair. Richland Community College, located in Decatur, Illinois, was founded in 1972 when it was known as Decatur Community College. Originally operating out of a former bank building, the school quickly outgrew the location and at the same time had its service area expanded, resulting in a name change to Richland Community College and the start of construction of a new permanent home.
